Phag Mo Gling - A Paradise of Birding

Phag Mo Gling, located at Town of Bajiaolou, Yajiang County, Ganzi Tibetan Prefecture, 464km southwest to Chengdu City, is a Kagyu monastery with a history of 900 years. Phag Mo Gling was named after the mountain where it is located. Holy Phag Mo Gling Mount is situated on its east side, which is called “Dhoji Phag Mo in Tibetan. Benefited from the belief and teaching of reincarnation as well as creatures born in equal in Tibetan Buddhism, the wildlife around the monastery has been always worshiped and looked after by lamas and local people, harmoniously living with human beings. The monastery, at an altitude of 4,160m, is surrounded by mountains. When it is sunny, Holy Yala Mount and Mt. Minya Konka, the King of Sichuan mountains can be seen standing in the far horizon, which pictures a great view in the sunshine.

Due to the effective protection to the wildlife, Phag Mo Gling is awarded with Prize of Ecology Conservation in Ganzi Tibetan Prefecture in 2005. Since then the monastery has been carrying out a work of wildlife supervision under the assistance of Yajiang County Forestry Bureau as well Conservation International.  And so far Phag Mo Gling is still unknown for most bird watchers in China as well as overseas. The rare birds living nearby include: Chinese Hazel Grouse and Golden Eagle under the first class state protection and Sichuan Pheasant Partridge¡¢Blood Pheasant¡¢Yellow-necked Koklass Pheasant¡¢White-Eared Pheasant¡¢Derby's Parakeet¡¢Black-eared Kite¡¢Northern Goshawk¡¢Common Buzzard£¬Common Kestrel¡¢Eurasian Hobby under the second class state protection.

At present electricity has not yet been laid on to this place and lamas in the monastery still repeat their daily life as their ancestors hundred of years ago. The lamas there have established a very interesting relationship with the birds nearby. Early every morning birds like White Eared Pheasant, Sichuan Pheasant Partridge, Blood Pheasant, etc visit a slope next to the monastery on a regular basis, waiting for lamas to offer them grains.
 
The monastery is just building a guesthouse with a traditional Tibetan style, which will be finished in early 2009. As it is finished the lamas in the monastery will serve as the attendants, who will cook and make room for the guests with a feeling of living with Tibetan families.

Now Phag Mo Gling is opening the door to welcome guests from all over the world to visit this god-blessed place, a Paradise of Birding.

Phag Mo Gling is located 464km southwest to Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province.

Tibetan villages are situated at the foot of Phag Mo Gling at 3,100m above sea level, which are about 12km away from the top, where Phag Mo Gling Monastery is located.
Phag Mo Gling is surrounded by forested mountains with tremendously large biodiversity.
Phag Mo Gling Monastery is located on the top of Phag Mo Gling at altitude of 4,190m.
