Hengduan Range, in the far south-west of China, stands on the southeast corner of Tibet Plateau at the intersection of estern Tibet Autonimous region, western Sichuan and Yunnan provinces. The environmental conditions here, from alpine slopes to temperate forests and high grasslands, has given rise to one of the richest and most diverse temperate floras in the world. Towards the end of the nineteenth century, and into the early twentieth, the great plant-hunters Ernest ¡®Chinese¡¯ Wilson, George Forrest, Joseph Rock, and Purdom and Farrer travelled through Sichuan and collected what, today, are some of westerners' best-known garden plants, and introduced them for the first time into cultivation in European gardens. This area is also a fabulously bird-rich region, home to the bulk of China's endemic birds. The pride of Hengduan Range is awarded to the fabulous pheasants and is the epicenter of pheasant diversity, such as osmic Temminck's Tragopan, Golden Pheasant, Lady Amherst's Pheasant, Koklass and Blood pheasants, White Eared-Pheasant, and Blue Eared-Pheasant, etc. This area is most famous as the home of the enigmatic giant panda, as the dense bamboo forests do not give up its greatest prize without much fortune. Other mammals include the red panda, yellow-throated marten, Chinese ferret badger, and lesser Indian civet, among others. You may follow in the footsteps of those explorers into this wonderful area.
